News summary

Yom Kippur 2024: Data from the Ministry of Environmental Protection indicate that very good air quality was recorded throughout the country.

Data at most air quality monitoring stations scattered throughout the country indicate a decrease in air pollution caused by nitrogen oxides during the holiday • The improvement in air quality at these stations on Yom Kippur demonstrates the impact of transportation as the main source of air pollution in large cities; At the same time, the influence of Israel's largest industry on short-term concentrations of benzene (half an hour) is evident – without deviating from circadian standards.

Very good air quality was recorded on Yom Kippur 2024 at all the monitoring stations of the National Air Monitoring System, which is supervised by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

All data are available to the public in real time at any time on the website: www.svivaaqm.net and in the "Air in the Vicinity" application of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

With the advent of the holiday, concentrations of nitrogen oxides – a marker of air pollution from vehicles – dropped at most transportation stations in Haifa, Gush Dan and Jerusalem. The peak concentrations of nitrogen oxides on Yom Kippur at transportation stations in major cities were between 3.7 and 38.9 parts per billion (ppb) – very low values compared to the semi-hourly environmental value of 500 ppb. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) cause various symptoms of respiratory diseases and reduce the body's resistance to bacteria and viruses.

THE SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN AIR QUALITY ON YOM KIPPUR DEMONSTRATES THE IMPACT OF TRANSPORTATION AS THE MAIN SOURCE OF AIR POLLUTION IN THE CENTERS OF LARGE CITIES. AS ON YOM KIPPUR, THE DECLINE OCCURRED IN NITROGEN OXIDES AND AIR POLLUTANTS EMITTED FROM TRANSPORTATION. FOR PARTICLES PASSING THROUGH THE RESPIRATORY TRACT (PM 2.5 AND PM 10), SOME OF WHICH ARE OF NATURAL ORIGIN AS WELL AS SECONDARY POLLUTANTS (SUCH AS OZONE), THERE IS NOT NECESSARILY A DECREASE ON YOM KIPPUR.
